I'm glad you're here. Let's get into today's episode and boss up together.

Candice Dorsey:

Hey boss ladies, and welcome to another episode of the Hey Boss Lady podcast. I have Rachel Dorsey here on the podcast today, certified working genius, facilitator and leadership coach of the Eaton Candle and uh, leadership. Hi Rachel. How are you doing today?

Rachel Dorsey:

I am doing fabulous, Candace. This is a full circle moment for us. I am so excited to be here. Thanks for having me today.

Candice Dorsey:

Yay. I'm so excited. So tell everyone who you are and what you do.

Rachel Dorsey:

Absolutely. My name is Rachel Dorsey. Um, I am a working Genius facilitator. Uh, I got certified back in December of 24. So I work with individuals, small and medium sized teams, and I help them identify the work that lights them up, gives them joy so that they can better, um. Work together better communicate, work through work. My goal is to change the way that people look at work and see it in a positive light. Uh, so I love what I get to do Once I tapped into that and I figured out, Ooh, I can do this and make money from it. Absolute game changer.

Candice Dorsey:

I love it.

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

I cannot wait to dive into it. So

Rachel Dorsey:

Yeah.

Candice Dorsey:

tell us about, how'd you get the boss status? What was their journey like for you?

Rachel Dorsey:

Oh, great question. I don't know if I can say that I've actually arrived. Um, but the journey has been super fun. So I think for me. The key in my journey has just been paying attention to the opportunities that are presented in front of me. And they may not be a specific job offer. It may not be, um, you know, a request to be interviewed on an amazing podcast. It may just be small opportunities to invest in myself or invest in others. So I am currently working at the Virtual Savvy, as well. They're my employer. Love my job, love what I get to do, and, but I didn't start in executive leadership at the company. I first started as a student and learning how to be a virtual assistant, but then I joined the team about almost two years after I started my business and I was given opportunities to interact with. Coach other students that were going through the same program that I was, it wasn't necessarily an official job offer. It was something that was available to me inside of, of the position that I was already in, you know, and there were other opportunities along the way. Um, several years ago after realizing and tapping into my love for coaching and mentoring. There were opportunities to invest in myself and learn more about coaching and mentoring. Again, wasn't necessarily another job offer, but it was an opportunity to explore and learn and invest. And so I did that. John Maxwell has a certification program. I did that. In, um, late 23, early 24. And then, like I mentioned earlier, I did my Working Genius certification in December of 2024, and just paying attention to those opportunities for growth and learning and investment that just step into my path and, and looking at those opportunities as is this the next right thing that I need to do? Focus on the next right thing and then the next right thing after that will, will come forward. Um, but just looking and paying attention to, and stepping into those, those opportunities have allowed me to continue in this journey of boss lady. So, yeah.

Candice Dorsey:

love it. I love it so much. And I think that's one of the things that we don't pay attention to, like what is the next right thing? And we was just talking about the book,

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

The next right thing, which I'm definitely gonna pick that up.

Rachel Dorsey:

Yes. Yes.

Candice Dorsey:

just having, just having that, I guess that. You know that help

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

steps.'cause oftentimes we don't know

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

we think it's this, but then it is not this. But then it's like, oh, well we like all different places. I can speak that for myself.

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

know. Like I think by five different things is the next right thing.,

Rachel Dorsey:

I totally agree and sometimes, sometimes we have to step out in faith. Not know what the very next step after that is going to be. And that can be super, super scary. And so, like, you know, even looking at my own journey and, and you, Candace and your listeners as well, like you can, retrospect is a powerful thing, right? You can look backwards and see the different steps that you've taken, but each one of those next steps that you've taken is a part of your journey that's going to be. Forever ongoing and you know, putting on the name tag or claiming the title of, of Boss Lady is just one of those steps. We're never going to finally arrive at the status. It's no, I'm claiming that this is who I am and this is what I want to be. I want to be in charge of my own life and I'm going to take that next step, whatever it is for you. But also, you know, kind of tying in the working genius is making sure that you are loving what you're doing. That what you do brings you joy and energy and fulfillment. If you're leaving your day drained and exhausted and frustrated, there's something out of alignment that we need to dive into. Not that life is always going to be easy and life is always going to be. Happy. Um, it's not a good word to use, but, um, the work that you do can energize you. It can bring you joy, it can bring you fulfillment, and so you also want to make sure that those are aligned as well.

Candice Dorsey:

I was totally getting ready to segue into something, but I better sit on topic because you know, the thing of it is, it's so funny because we were taught and told our all of our lives to get a job and. We always were like, oh, I don't like that. I've been the one that I've been like, I don't like this. I'm leaving. And then, you know, I had to learn to, even though I don't like it, I still need to do it because it pays the bills or it brings in the money. So even though you don't like something, you know, you still have to do it. And I think we're programmed

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

To stay in something that we don't like

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

we have to

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

in the money. You get what I'm saying?

Rachel Dorsey:

Yeah. Yeah.

Candice Dorsey:

that is, is stuck there, that's still doing things that they don't like doing

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

they have to. And my mom, she gets on my case,

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

she gets on my case about it. She was like, if you don't like the client work, then tell them bye. I am like, but mom,

Rachel Dorsey:

Oh

Candice Dorsey:

getting money.

Rachel Dorsey:

mm. I like Mama.

Candice Dorsey:

You my mama. She is, she's totally different person now. Like as I got older, she was like, no, you need to get rid of that. You

Rachel Dorsey:

Oh, that's so good.

Candice Dorsey:

in money, you

Rachel Dorsey:

Yeah.

Candice Dorsey:

she's like, no.

Rachel Dorsey:

Yeah. If we recognize that we actually do have the choice. We can take control then it's a, it's a game changer. Now, I'm not going to tell you to just up and quit your job and leave today and go chase after something. No, no, no, no. We're going to be reasonable. We're gonna make a plan. We're gonna, what's the next right thing that I need to do and, and figure that out. But you do not have to stay trapped. In a toxic environment, you do not have to be trapped in work that does not light you up, that does not energize you. And, uh, just identifying it, putting a label on it can bring that self-awareness to help you make the next right choice for you in whatever that is. Whether. You're an employee, uh, whether it's something that you're going to be doing with an organization, maybe your church or volunteering somewhere, or maybe it's a business and, and what you're doing and what you're offering your clients, all of that, uh, can be aligned when you identify what you love to do and just labeling it can be a game changer.

Candice Dorsey:

Uh, I

Rachel Dorsey:

Hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

so much. love it.

Rachel Dorsey:

Yeah.

Candice Dorsey:

what was one pivot that surprised you the most and taught you something, game changing about yourself?

Rachel Dorsey:

Such a great question and I, I think for me it was kind of in the same line of what we were just talking about is saying yes to myself. Like I, I can say yes to myself. I can, I can make the choice that this is what I want to do because this is what I love doing. And when I made that choice of saying yes to myself, I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it was and how much joy I was receiving. And not in a selfish way. And this is what I was meant to do. This is, I, I don't believe that we are meant to, to grind and be miserable and be stuck. No, I is grind and grit required. Yes it is, but let's, let's have joy and fulfillment while we're doing that, right? It's going to take hard work. It's going to take grit, but that doesn't mean that we can't enjoy it. And so. Pivotal for me was saying yes to myself, being a little selfish in essence and saying, no, I want to do this. I want to invest in myself. I want to put the energy behind this. And then on the backside of that, receiving the fulfillment and be like, oh, this is, this is what it's supposed to be about. This is good. And continuing down that path.

Candice Dorsey:

I love that. Oh, love it so much. So we're going to dive into Reignite your workday. Three simple shifts to energize your work. Can you tell us more about that?

Rachel Dorsey:

I'm gonna give you three simple steps. Um, if you're a writer, write this down. If you're a typer, get your phone out and type it out. Whatever this looks like for you. I'm gonna give you three simple steps to reignite your workday. So, Candace introduced, the name of my business. It's in Kindle. Leadership in Kindle, is a synonym for Ignite. So think of a fire. I love the analogy of a. Fire. I also love a real fire. Um, no, I'm not a pyro, but I do love like sitting around a campfire. One of my favorite treats, s'mores, um, growing up, I remember, I distinctly remember Sunday evenings, we would, we would have a fire on the back porch and we would roast hot dogs and have s'mores. And those memories, that feeling of comfort and joy around a fire started very, very young. And as I've gotten older, I've had amazing conversations with family, with my husband, with friends sitting around a fire. But if you also look at a fire, it can be used in very powerful ways in nature when used appropriately and used in the right way. Fire is a source of light. Fire is a source of warmth. All of those things. And so. In Kindle, I want to ignite and help others ignite that within themselves and, and the passion and, uh, identify their purpose and identify what brings them joy and fulfillment. And one of the areas in which we spend a lot of time is our work. So how can we reignite that joy and fulfillment inside of our work? I'll give you three things. The first one. Prioritize your energizing tasks. Believe it or not, it's actually more important that you start with the things that energize you versus getting the grunt work out of the way. Sometimes the phrase is used, eat the frog first. I'm not necessarily on that train. Um, I think that if you can start with the things that energize you, prioritize those, make those the bulk of your day, that's going to keep the momentum going now. Can you take away all the work that you don't enjoy doing? No, that's not reality. There are going to be things that you don't want to do. There are going to be things that you don't like to do, but if you can prioritize work, 80%. What you love doing. Then we can look at the other 20%. We can time block it. We can figure out when those tasks are best, put in our day and and schedule those out. We can also do the second tip, which is. We can, delegate those tasks out that we don't like to do, or we can simplify those tasks that we don't like to do. So first we're gonna prioritize the tasks that energize us, that bring us joy. bring us fulfillment, bring us energy. And then second, we're gonna look at those tasks that don't. Is there a way that we can simplify them? There are tools and platforms out there. Um, ai, we won't even get into that train, but like. There are so many ways that we can simplify the things that we don't love doing. Maybe you can even delegate and, you know, I know we're focused on our workday, but I delegate my grocery shopping to others. Like, I don't want to spend the hour walking down the crowded aisles to find the spaghetti sauce or the cereal, or. The milk that's not going to expire tomorrow. Like, I don't want to do that. I'm gonna delegate that to somebody else and I'm gonna simplify it for myself. And so, looking at those opportunities to simplify or delegate. And number three is to build energizing tasks into your day. Like look at those things that you can, uh, do in your day, start your day, that light, that energy, and build into it. So a personal example for me is, and I was telling Candace this in a earlier conversation, was my gratitude journal. I have never necessarily claimed to be a journaler. I, it never has been a habit that I have necessarily, uh, kept up with. I've tried to, but I've never found something that I could stick with. Until most recently, I figured out I love expressing the things that I'm grateful for, and that brings me joy and that brings me energy. And I also love a list. I'm, I love a good to-do list and all the things I, so I took those two joys and I combined them. And so I start my day with a gratitude list. I write down. I'm thankful for. I'm thankful for, I'm thankful for, and I name specific things, both present and future. And so I recognized expressing gratitude. I know I love a good list. And building into that, that energizing task. It could be exercise, it could be yoga, it could be meditating or prayer. It. It could be reading, it could be a whole myriad of things, but find those things that energize you at the beginning and build into that. Build habits. Build structure around that. So number one, we're gonna prioritize the work, the tasks that give us joy. We're gonna focus on those, identify the ones that don't. We can do that even through great tools like the Working a Genius assessment, right? Like that's a tool that can help you identify the work, the tasks that you love. And like I said earlier, put a label on it. Are you a wonderer or are you an enabler? Are you an inventor or are you a galvanizer? If you can just label what you are. And not in a negative way, quite the opposite, in a very positive way. It can help you to prioritize, simplify, or delegate, and build upon. Those are the three tips. Reigniting your workday.

Candice Dorsey:

I love this. And, you know, while you were talking, I was like, I do something that I didn't realize I do until a client brought it outta me.

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm.

Candice Dorsey:

in the morning time, I don't like to do work right away.

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

I,

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

say, Candice, you're lollygagging. But no, I actually like to do like more. Well, my client told me, she said, I do more of the, the, the planning or

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

uh, the planning

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

morning and then the implementation in the afternoon.'cause I have like this lunch period and sometimes I'll go for a walk and then after that, that's when I actually like will do the client work and task and everything. I'm like, candy, did you. saying, unless I can, you gotta stop doing that because you're doing your, your client work later on in the day.

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

so hard for me just to get up

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

my client work in the morning. And then it's kind of like I'm not there because I have other things on my mind

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

'cause I'm a creative,

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

I like to do all of my creative stuff in the morning and that's like. You know, building out pages, all you know, or whatever I need to do for my business creative wise.

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

I do the implementation for my

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

I'm going to go ahead and do this for

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

this, this,

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

I need

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

So when you were saying that, I was like, oh my goodness, I am kind of doing that.

Rachel Dorsey:

Mm-hmm.

Candice Dorsey:

to add in that that extra, that third one.

Rachel Dorsey:

Yeah, yeah, no, for sure. And it's just, it's the self-awareness piece. And I, if you knew me two years ago, you would not have heard from somebody who loves a good assessment and telling you who you are and, what you love doing or what your personality is. I was quite the opposite. I kind of. Pushed against and said, no, I don't. I don't wanna be told all of that. But what's so different about the working genius is that it's not focused on my personality, it's focused on what I love doing the work like Prote. Activity, um, and identifying that because that's it, it it's part of the bigger picture. Yes, there is an element of personality in that for sure, but we're looking at what's the work, what's, what types of things light me up and give me joy and that self-awareness can give us. And arm us with the information. When we're looking at big decisions like, is this opportunity, is this client that I'm looking at? Is this gonna allow me to operate within my geniuses? No. Then why would I even consider it? Because it's not going to be joyful or fulfilling for me. Right, and looking at, okay, is this opportunity to serve all? Although it's a great opportunity to serve and serving is good, and volunteering is important, and giving of ourselves, absolutely. But is that gonna allow me to operate and thrive within my geniuses? Then I'm not gonna show up in my best person, right? If it's yes, then heck yes. Let's do it. And it's okay to make a decision based on that. It's giving your. Yourself permission to say yes.

Candice Dorsey:

Now I'm thinking, ah, Rachel has had me thinking

Rachel Dorsey:

thinking is good. Thinking is good.

Candice Dorsey:

just be going.

Rachel Dorsey:

Yes. Good, good, good.

Candice Dorsey:

Awesome. So as you know here at Hayball Slaves, we're all about connection and collaboration. What type of collaborations are you looking for right now?

Rachel Dorsey:

I love that you asked this, Candace, because, uh, you know me, I'm very much a relational person, so building connections, helping other people build connections is a value of mine. It's a joy of mine. I want to connect, um, with you if you are wanting to explore more of what's the work that lights me up., And so I wanna connect with you if that's your thing, or maybe, you know, or you're part of a team where this could be helpful for your team, then I would love to connect with you and learn more about that as well. Um, as far as, uh, my personal growth and who I want to interact with and learn from, surprisingly enough, I want to be connected and learn from other people doing something of the same. I am one that strongly believes there's room in this world for everyone because we're all different and we're all unique, even though we might be doing similar things. And so maybe you know, of somebody that does, uh, leadership consulting or, um, works with small, medium sized teams, I would love to interact and, and be connected with you or someone else that you may know.

Candice Dorsey:

Awesome. how can people connect with you?

Rachel Dorsey:

You simply reach out to me. You can find me on LinkedIn, slash in Kindle leadership. I'm sure Candace will give you all the spelling, all the things. Uh, you can email me directly at hello@inkindleleadership.com. And I even have a special offer for the listeners, um, as well. And Candace can give you that link and you can reach out if that's something of interest to you as well.

Candice Dorsey:

Awesome. Well, thank you Rachel so much for being. On the podcast today, it is always a joy to sit with you

Rachel Dorsey:

Hmm

Candice Dorsey:

conversations. I always learn so much from you.

Rachel Dorsey:

Hmm. Thanks Candace so much. It's been a joy. I.
